Margaret King Hello my name is Margaret King. I am an apparel / textile designer by trade. I have a love for fabric and textile arts and crafts. My favorite area is historic costume and reproduction fabrics. My favorite book on quilts is the ‘Smithsonian Collection’ published by Martingale & Co. The beauty of the tradition and art of quilting by our founding mothers is so well captured in this book. It makes me wish I had more time to quilt! My other passion is travel. And I enjoy nothing more than going to see costume and textile collections when I do travel.
Peggy, who is my friend and sister in-law, and I started talking about combining our 2 loves, quilting and fabrics, to start a business almost 2 years ago. Well, after attending the International Quilt show in Portland this past spring, we decided it was time to stop talking and start doing it. So, here we are with our first collection of fat quarters.
I have been working with our mill in India, Uma Sankar Fabrics, for over three years. When I approached them about supplying fabrics for our online quilt store they were eager to work with us. Our plan is to have new groupings every month, so our inventory will be expanding. As our mill is an expert in yarn dyes, the bulk of our fabrics will be plaids and stripes in both flat and flannels. However, we will also be looking into supplying prints to help round out our assortment. Stay tuned, and you’ll see us growing and changing!
Bentley Bentley is our 11year old Maine coon cat. We adopted Bentley about a year and half ago from the humane society. We had just lost our cat Bub who was also a Maine coon, to cancer. It had been a traumatic experience and when we found Bentley about 1 month after loosing Bub, we had felt strongly toward saving this then 10year old cat whose previous owner’s had given him away because of a ‘peeing’ problem. We are very happy to say Bentley has never had any such problem with us. Any ways, other than sometimes talking way too much at 5a.m., Bentley is an absolute sweetie. We call him our sugar cat (often we call him zuker katzen – which is bad German for sugar cat). We are very glad we could give him a happy home to spend the rest of his years in comfort with people who love to give him his sugar.
Peggy Yates Greetings to all. My name is Peggy Yates and, as Margaret said, we are friends and sisters in-law. We share a common love of color and textiles. And when used in the creation of a quilt it is pure magic. I am equally awed and impressed by the simplest of designs to the complex art quilts. There is truly something for everyone in quilts.
My love for quilts began at 12 when my great grandma set me down with a pile of Dresden plate rings that she had hand pieced and had me appliqué them to muslin squares. I thought they needed more color so I added yellow and red centers with embroidery stitches. They actually looked pretty good and when I was 16 they became a quilt. At 19 I took my first quilt class and I have been quilting ever since. I have worked in many fabric stores over the years but it was bliss when I finally worked in a quilt shop. There I taught many quilt classes, played with fabric, did the window displays, played with fabric, helped customers with their selections and played with fabric. This led to a job at That Patchwork Place, now Martingale Press, where I worked with a great group of talented quilters. I had many great experiences during my four years working there. When my coworkers and I would have quilt shop field trips our show and tell would produce many wonderful finds, but mine would be very predictable. PLAIDS! I am mad for plaids. There is something comforting and homey about plaids. It must be in our pioneer heritage. So I am very pleased that our first offerings are quality stripes and plaids at great stash building prices.
I do have a life outside of fabric and quilts. My husband Mike and I have been married for 26 years and have three children. Matt is in the Air Force and is currently living in Germany. Jennifer is still considered a newlywed and Kelly just started college. And I almost have my sewing room back. I also have 3 rather large dogs, 6 cats, a rabbit and a hamster. My cats all have input on the quilting projects and it is mostly hair. Emma is the sewing cat and she is right there "helping" with everything I do. (She is draped across the computer monitor as I type). Be very glad your fabric selections are handled in a pet free/fur free facility.
Margaret and I look forward to giving you great value and customer service and would welcome your comments/suggestions.
Happy Quilting
